I just got my new server up and going, and tried out both Xenserver and Proxmox, and while I'm not an expert on either yet, Proxmox was far easier to configure for me. I was able to easily set up a ZFS mirror for the system volumes, and a RAIDz2 for the datastore essentially.

I got this doubt, because I didn't come across any topic in SW related to Proxmox, oVirt kind. Use cases for Proxmox vs.

Proxmox is build on KVM which has better performance metrics than XEN. XEN has something called paravirtualization which has a number of benefits of it's own. So if you're going to use para then obviously XEN is the choice. The open-source platform Proxmox VE comes with zero license cost, provides full access to all functionalities, and increases the flexibility, security, and reliability of your IT infrastructure. Proxmox VE is already the best choice for thousands of satisfied customers when it comes to choosing an alternative to VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V or Citrix XenServer.

As far as exporting from xenserver vs clonezilla, I don't know if exporting from xenserver creates "thin" files or if they are roughly the same size as a the guest's disk. With clonezilla, your image size (or transfer size if doing VM to VM) should be just a bit bigger than the used space on the filesystems, which could be no big deal or a really big deal, depending on your VMs.

Xen used to be a better choice when you had to rely on automation tasks. Proxmox has grown to be capable of these tasks, and also has integration with ansible, ceph storage and others. You can manage it with either a command line or a browser. For a single node system Proxmox is fantastic and its pretty easy to do an AIO with ZoL running on the host OS. Xenserver is solid, easy to manage and easy to cluster. For simple VMs you'll love it. So it leaves you with ESXI, XenServer, Hyper-V, Proxmox and XCP-NG (that is a fork of XenServer). AWS most likely use KVM alike with Google and other big companies that is in the enterprise.
