Graptolithina is a subclass of the class Pterobranchia, the members of which are known as graptolites. These organisms are colonial animals known chiefly as fossils from the Middle Cambrian through the Lower Carboniferous. A possible early graptolite, Chaunograptus, is known from the Middle Cambrian. One analysis suggests that the pterobranch Rhabdopleura represents extant graptolites. Studies on the tubarium of fossil and living graptolites showed similarities in the basic fusellar construction

Ordovician, Silurian, Cuttings, Outcrops, Rating: ♦♦♦♦♦ The first graptolites appeared in the Upper Cambrian period in the form of the order Dendroidia. The Dendroids are the oldest Graptolites in the fossil record.(McNamara 2014) The Dendroids lived in colonies that were comprised of several individuals, zooids, which were connected to each other by a common nervous system.(www2) The Dendroids were mostly comprised of sessile benthic filter Beginning of period. ÿ The Ordovician period began when most of the Cambrian trilobites died out. The trilobites were replaced by various groups of unknown origin during the Ordovician. ÿ A boundary marking the end of the Cambrian and the beginning of the Ordovician is the appearance of planktic dictyonemid graptolites.

The 70 Ma Ordovician Period is characterized by extensive epeiric seas, paleocontinent dispersal, intervals of intense volcanism and black shale deposition, a greenhouse climate state deteriorating to a brief icehouse state, strong faunal provincialism, and profound changes to the biota including the changeover from the Cambrian Fauna to the Paleozoic Fauna. 2021-3-30 · The Ordovician is the second period of the Paleozoic era.

Graptolite, any member of an extinct group of small, aquatic colonial animals that first became apparent during the Cambrian Period (542 million to 488 million years ago) and that persisted into the Early Carboniferous Period (359 million to 318 million years ago). Graptolites were floating For example, graptolites reached their peak diversity in the Early Ordovician Epoch, whereas gastropods continued to diversify steadily through the entire Ordovician Period. Similarly, overall diversity on the cratons of Laurentia and Baltica peaked in the early Late Ordovician Epoch, whereas diversity peaked in South China in the Early Ordovician Epoch.

Introduction. Latest Ordovician to earliest Silurian is an important geological period marked by distinct paleontological, paleoenvironmental and paleogeographical changes. However, in many parts of the world the O/S transition is not complete.
