French New Wave was marked by the genius of directors like Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut, and was arguably at its height with films like “The 400 Blows” (1959) and “Breathless” (1960). It duly inspired and was inspired by directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Morris Engel. There were warning surges in 1955 (Varda’s La Pointe-courte), 1956 (Jean-Pierre Melville’s Bob le flambeur) and 1958 (Claude Chabrol’s Le Beau Serge), but the French New Wave became a deluge in 1959, with Truffaut, Godard, Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette following Chabrol’s route into film production from a background in firebrand film criticism at the journal Cahiers du Cinéma. Historically, the movement grew in the late 1950s and 1960s out of the famous French film magazine, Cahiers du cinema, whose editor and co-founder, André Bazin, was an endless source not only of inspiration but of actual employment for many of the key figures of the French new wave, including its twin titans Godard and Truffaut. The likes of Le beau Serge (Handsome Serge) and Les cousins (The Cousins) are essential to the New Wave lexicon, creating tense and atmospheric dramas that are coated with Chabrol’s adoration of Hitchcockian themes and suspense.
